The Bible

“A man who loves his wife will love her letter and her photographs because they speak to him of her, so if we love the Lord Jesus we shall love the Bible because it speaks to us of Him.” - John R. W. Scott

The Bible is not just any Book. It is The Book. It is the very Word of God and it has life. God gave us the Bible as a divine love letter. It is one of God’s special ways of communicating with us. When we read the Bible it gives strength to our spirit.

The Bible is still the world’s best selling book. It relates to every area of our lives. There are stories of adventure, romance, and betrayal. The Bible records sins such as adultery, rape, murder, lying, alcohol abuse, and greed. People suffer from depression, loneliness, misunderstanding, and family and marital problems. The Bible is about real people for real people. It contains songs, poems, dialogues, parables, visions and historical narratives.

Inspiration

The Bible is the word of God as He inspired men to write it. The Bible was written more than 1800 years ago in the Hebrew and the Greek languages. The King James version was translated into the English Language in the early 1600’s. It is a divine library of 66 books revealing the origin and destiny of all things. It is the best source of information for those who want to know where they came from and what their future will be. It is self-interpreting and covers every subject of human knowledge and need now and forever.

Many Christians accept the Bible as the authoritative Word of God and look to it for direction on how to live their lives today and forever. This Book reveals the mind of God, the way of salvation, joy and peace.

Translations

In recent years several new translations have been published that are easier to read and understand. Most of them are from the same original Greek and Hebrew language version.

The Bible continues to be the best selling book in the world. Millions of people read it daily for direction in life. The solution for many of the problems a person encounters in this life is found in the Bible.

The teachings of Jesus, the Son of God, are recorded in the first four books of the New Testament - Mathew, Mark, Luke and John. These four books each tell the story from a different perspective. The book of John is a great place to begin reading the Bible. Jesus taught multitudes of people using parables that they understood and He performed many miracles to reveal the glory of God that they might believe He is the Son of God.

The New Testament tells much of the life of Jesus Christ. The Old Testament tells of events from creation of the world until 400 years prior to the birth of Christ. It is good to read a portion of scripture every day as food for your spirit just as you eat bread every day as food for the body. As the scriptures become part of your thought life, you will find an inner peace and true joy if you obey these teachings.

Ten Commandments

I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

  I. You shall have no other gods before me.

II. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

III. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

IV. Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you.

  V. Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

  VI. You shall not murder.

VII. You shall not commit adultery.

  VIII. You shall not steal.

IX. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

  X. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor’s house or land, his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

  Deuteronomy 5:6-21

“Hear O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” Deuteronomy 6:4-9

When asked which was the greatest commandment of the law, Jesus replied, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Luke 10:27

Jesus said, “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:12, 13

Miracles

God is a loving being who is intimately involved in our lives. The Bible is full of accounts of God intervening on behalf of those He loves.

This is especially notable in the life of Jesus Christ. The majority of the interaction that Jesus had with those who came to Him involved healings and other forms of miracles.

Eternity

“In reply Jesus declared, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.’” - John 3:3

“A man can go to heaven without health, without riches, without honors, without learning, without friends; but he cannot ever go there without Christ.” - John Dyer

The Bible clearly states that when we die we shall spend eternity either in Heaven or Hell.

God is a God of justice. His justice demands adequate rewards. If there were no rewards for our behavior, then God would not be just. Heaven is the just reward for those who love God. Hell is the just reward for those who do not love God. If you love God you have nothing to be afraid of when you die.

Before He ascended into Heaven Jesus promised that He would return a second time. The book of Revelation records the events which are to happen.

Some people have portrayed the return of Christ as a frightening event, as a time when God unleashes his anger and everyone suffers greatly. When Jesus returns He will take his followers, those who have believed that Jesus Christ is the son of God and have accepted Him into their hearts, with Him into Heaven. The times of tribulation which follow are acts of God’s mercy. God is giving humanity one more time to repent of their sins.

Satan will be bound up and cast into the bottomless pit. Jesus will reign as King on earth for 1,000 years. This will be a time of peace. The Earth will come into her fulfillment as the creation she was intended to be.

After the 1,000 years are up Satan will be released. The battle of Armageddon will take place and God will win.

Everyone will participate in the Great Judgement. The Book of Life and the Book of the Deeds of Men will be opened. Everyone will be judged according to his or her deeds in the books. If your name is not recorded in the Book of Life you, along with Satan and his demons and the other unbelievers will be cast into the lake of fire where you will live forever in torment. Just being a good person is not good enough. Without Jesus no one is good.

Those whose names are recorded in the Book of Life will join the angels and Jesus in Heaven where there will be no more tears. Heaven will not be boring. It will be full of the glory of God, the God who created the beautiful earth. Can you imagine how exciting that will be?

Prayer

Prayer is Talking to God

God always hears you when you pray. In prayer you can talk to Him like having a conversation with a good personal friend, using your everyday language. It is not necessary to use any special words or vocabulary. God understands and cares about you, your feelings, and what is happening in your life. He keeps track of every hair on (or off) your head; if He sees every sparrow that falls to the ground, how much more valuable are you?

God loves you and wants you to talk to him. He hears you when you pray. God is interested in the intricate detail of your life. Even though God already knows what is happening in your life, it gives Him great pleasure when we choose to share our feelings, thoughts and problems. He not only wants to hear you, but He wants you to hear Him.

Jesus taught His disciples how to pray. This is the prayer He taught them to pray:

“Our Father in Heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one,
for yours is the kingdom and the power and the
glory forever. Amen.”
- Matthew 6:9-13

Jesus did not intend for us to only use the exact words of this prayer, but He gave it to us as a guideline.

This prayer includes many elements. It honors God, and shows reverence for His name. It expresses our desire that His will be done instead of ours. The prayer also asks for provision for our needs, and acknowledges we need forgiveness and in order to receive it, we must forgive others. It recognizes the existence of evil, and asks for deliverance. It concludes with adoration and praise to God.

Heaven

This is what the Lord says,

"Heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me?"

Heaven is the house of God, the angels, and those who have become children of God by accepting Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.

God, His only Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit live in Heaven, but they are present everywhere. Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father.

Jesus says that, "In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of Heaven." Matthew 26:64

After Jesus was resurrected from the dead and had spent some time on earth with his disciples he went back into Heaven. "After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into Heaven and he sat at the right hand of God." Mark 16:19

Jesus instructs us to pray:

"Our Father in Heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one,
for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
Amen."
(Matthew 6:9, 13)

Heaven is a beautiful place!

When you got saved (or soon will!) Jesus says that, "There will be more rejoicing in Heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent."

In fact, Heaven will be similar in many respects to earth, but so far more glorious that the earth will look dingy in comparison. Imagine a beautiful sunny day while you are taking a walk through the forest. You sigh, "It can't get any more beautiful than this," you say. Well, it can. Heaven is beautiful beyond comparison. It is much more than gold streets and gates of pearl, though those are some of the descriptive words used to describe it.

A river as clear as crystal flows from the throne of God. Heaven will be a beautiful reward for those who have responded with open arms to the love of God.

God is a good God who desires to give good gifts to his children. He wants to bless and reward. He says that, "In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am." (John 14:2-3)

When Jesus returns we look forward to Heaven and a new earth. (2 Peter 3:13)

The book of Revelations records what will happen, "Then I saw a new Heaven and a new earth, for the first Heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea." (Revelation 21:1)

Angelic Beings

The angels are glorious beings who live in Heaven. They are God's messengers, but are not God. You cannot pray to an angel. Jesus sends guardian angels to watch out for people. Many people have had the special blessing of seeing angels. Their purpose is to live and glorify God by doing whatever He desires them to do.

Hell

The words Hell, Devil or Satan, and Demons are common in today's vocabulary. How much of this is real and how much of it is fiction?

Because God is a God of love He has created all beings with free will. He does not want robots for servants. God created Lucifer as the most beautiful and highest ranking angel in Heaven. Lucifer means "light bearer". Lucifer coveted the praises of God and decided that he wanted to be God.

"How you have fallen from heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, 'I will ascent to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.'" Isaiah 14:12-14

By trying to elevate himself above God, Lucifer made himself a devil. His pride was a terrible sin against God. One third of the angels in Heaven joined with Lucifer; by turning from God their very characters became hellish.

Hell

Hell is the eternal tragedy. It was created for Satan, and his demons, but not for people. After sin entered the world people who are not the children of God join these evil ones in Hell when they die on earth.

"The rich man also died and was buried. In Hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side." - Luke 16:23

Hell is described as a place of never ending torment. It is for the hellish, people who do not love God. It is a place of burning fire. God loved the world so much that he gave His only Son, Jesus Christ to die for the sins of the world. If people are so prideful that they think that they do not need God and think that they can live by their own power, then they deceive themselves and suffer from the same sin of Pride that was the downfall of Lucifer. Jesus does not force anyone to believe in Him; we all have free choice.

Hell is isolation. People who say that they want to party in Hell with their friends do not know what they are talking about. Hell will be the loneliest place ever. In Revelation it is described as the second death, a terrible death. Hell is referred to as the place of outer darkness where the light of God does not shine. Does this sound like a fun place to party? Each person in Hell will be someone who rejected the love of God and chose darkness.

Descriptive words of Hell include torture or torment (Revelation 20:10), outer darkness (Matthew 8:12  Matthew 22:13  Matthew 25:30), weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 8:12   Matthew 13:42  Matthew 22:13  Matthew 24:51  Matthew 25:30) and eternal fire (Matthew 18:8  Matthew 25:41  Jude 7).

Satan

Contrary to popular opinion Satan does not roam about in a red suit carrying a pitchfork. He is a very real person and active. Beelzebub, Belial , Adversary, Dragon, Serpent, Prince of this World, Prince of the Power of the Air, Accuser of the Brethren, Tempter, Fowler, Destroyer, Wolf, Thief, Father of Lies, Murderer, Sower of discord, Satan and Devil are some of the names for Lucifer, the fallen angel. These words describe his character. Satan is not to be mocked, but he is not to be worshipped. He has all of the power of an angel but none of the love or goodness.

Satan is a masterful deceiver. He is called the Father of Lies and the Old Dragon. He has been around since before the foundation of the earth. Unlike God, he cannot see all things at the same time and he cannot be everywhere at the same time. Though he is very powerful, God is more powerful. Satan has thousands of servants around the world doing his work. He prowls throughout the earth seeking someone he can destroy.

The apostle Peter warned us, "Be of Sober Spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." I Peter 5:8

John 8:44 says that "the Thief comes only to steal, to kill, and to destroy..." Satan hates everyone, but most of all he hates Christians. His very nature is to hate.

By dying on the cross Jesus Christ conquered Hell and Death; He defeated Satan once and for all. This means that when we die, we have the hope of eternal life in heaven. Because of the penalty of sin everyone was doomed to Hell. Jesus' death enables those who believe in Him to have eternal life. His blood redeems us from all sin. Satan thought that he had won when Jesus was crucified, but Jesus was victorious over death. Jesus was to die as the perfect sacrifice for our sins (John 3:16). It is just a matter of time before Satan will be thrown into the lake of eternal fire. Someday Satan and all unbelievers will have to bow before God and worship Him.

In Revelation 1:18, Jesus said "I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades."

There is only one way to escape hell! Believe upon Jesus. Confess your sins to Jesus and ask Him to forgive you and to cover your sins with His blood. You will not perish but will have everlasting life with Jesus in Heaven.

Demons

Demons are fallen angels who are guilty of the great sin of Pride. They are the hordes of Hell. They do all of the work for Satan. They never die; when Jesus comes back again they will be thrown into the lake of fire where they will be tormented forever. Demons can easily attach themselves to people. Generational demons like to stay in family lines. Sometimes you will see a family who suffers from some of the same problems in each generation. This is usually caused by generational spirits. Typical spirits people "inherit" are: fear of the dark, alcoholism, self pity, drug addiction, epilepsy, diabetes, rebellion, pride, fear, inadequacy, nerve conditions, stubbornness, mental illness, and many others.

  • Demons can possess people, cause diseases, dumbness, blindness, and deafness [Matthew 4:23,24; 9:32,33; 12:22; Mark 9:25].
  • They can cause lunacy, mania, and suicide [Matthew 4:23-24  Matthew 17:14-21 Mark 5:1-8; 9:20];
  • Distribute uncleanness [Luke 4:36],
  • Spread or create lust [John 8:44; Ephesians 2:1-3  I John 2:15-17],
  • And manifest supernatural strength [Mark 5:2-16].
  • They will try to get you to worship them instead of Jesus Christ [Leviticus 17:7; Deuteronomy 32:17   II Chronicles 1:15   Psalm 106:37   I Corinthians 10:20   Revelation 9:20].
  • They deceive, lie, practice witchcraft and disseminate false teachings [I Timothy 4:12   I John 4:1-6   I Kings 22:21-24   II Chronicles 33:6   I Samuel 18:8-10].
  • Demons oppress, are jealous, tell fortunes, steal, fight, possess men at will, travel, and imitate the departed dead [Acts 10:38   I Samuel 16:14   I Timothy 4:1   Matthew 12:43-45   13:10;  Luke 8:12; Ephesians 4:27   Ephesians 5:10-13; Isaiah 8:19  Deuteronomy 18:11].
  • They fight against Christians, bring sickness on those who they possess, influence people, and have unbelievers on their side [Ephesians 2:1-3  Ephesians 6:10-18   I Timothy 4:1-5   II Peter 2:10-12   Matthew 12:22   Matthew 17:15-18].
  • Thousands of them can possess a person at one time. [Mark 4:1-18   Matthew 12:43-45].

Spiritual Warfare

Every spirit regardless of its rank, including the devil, is subject to the name of Jesus Christ. You can pray firmly, "Satan, I bind you by the blood of Jesus Christ. I command you to shut your mouth, to leave, and never come back in Jesus name!"

The good news is that by the power and authority of the Blood of Jesus Christ we have the power to resist the devil. James 4:7 tells us "Submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
