The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Matthew 23:11-12

Have you ever wondered how can I become great? Or how can I become the best? It is human nature to want to excel and be on top. This drive within us causes us to do things we would never naturally do. For example, lets say that you are trying to be the CEO of a company. Because you want to be the CEO you make sacrifices. You come in early and stay late to do the most work possible. Whenever there is an office party you organize it and pay for all the food. You look for whatever opportunity you can to please the authority over you in hopes of being promoted. If you were not trying to be the CEO of the company you would never do these things. It would be much easier to do the bare minimum.

This same concept applies in the Kingdom of God. In order to be the greatest we must lower ourselves. If we want to be promoted into the highest level of leadership we must do whatever our superior tells us. Our position in God’s kingdom is determined by our level of obedience.

The concept of total submission, servanthood, seems to come naturally in the work place. It’s a no-brainer for those truly wanting to obtain excellence. Why is it so hard to strive for excellence in our spiritual lives and completely submit to God?

Number one: The most common reason we do not strive for spiritual greatness is because we believe it is unattainable. Listen carefully to the words of Jesus, “The greatest among you will be your servant.” If you can be a servant, you can be the greatest and the best thing about being a Christian is that our master God gives us everything we need to serve him if we just ask.

Number two: Total submission and servanthood at work does not involve every area of your life. If it is separate from work, you can do what you please. Total submission and servanthood to God is all consuming. There is not one area that can go without surrendering.

Today, know with full confidence that you can be the greatest in the kingdom of God. All it requires is your servanthood. This servanthood does not have to be mustered up with in yourself. Ask God to give it to you and he will. His grace will help you give over the areas of your life that you can’t let go of. Trust him and he will do the work within you. Become the greatest today!
